Final Drive oil change

I'm planning on changing the oil tomorrow in the final drives my tb108. Looks a straightforward job according to the manual. Position the holes as per diagram, remove plugs, drain oil, fit bottom plug, fill with oil until it comes out of upper hole, fit upper plug. The manual says to wrap sealing tape around the threads on the plugs, any ideas on what to use? Is it the same stuff, PTFE, as used on plumbing fitments? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

PTFE will do it. The thin stuff, not the thick Stuff plumbers use.

I find it easier to drain through the bottom hole. Then rotate to half way and refill through the same hole. Gearing always seems to get in the way when I'm trying to fill through the 'proper' fill hole.

Also not a bad idea of its really nasty inside to flush it out with oil until it all runs clear. IE fill but let it run out for a bit to flush out any residual old oil.

I like that idea. I bought 5 litres of oil, only holds .33 each side so plenty spare.

I can't really comment as i've never messed with one before, just going off the manual. No mention of sealing tape anywhere online.

They usually have either an O ring, dowty washer or a copper washer. Have also seen aluminium washers. But do have other things with tapered bungs that would require a bit of tape. But I also find a drop of hydraulic thread sealer usually does the trick as an option to tape

Unlike an engine / transmission with a fixed drain on the bottom, it really isn't critical.
If it weeps a bit, you can remove and reseal at any time just by parking with the plugs above half-way.

TB108 has O rings on the plugs from memory.

Personally on a digger that size I get the drives warm, drain it. Fill with diesel, do a couple revolutions of the motor, drain, fill with oil, rotate for 10-15mins, drain, refill.

FYI there sealed units, so position the drain plug at the top, remove and then turn it to the bottom. Else you'll make a good YBF video.

The metal filings usually plug the holes and stop it weeping pretty quickly, wouldn’t worry. I always try to drain them when warm, speeds things up if anything!

They do have o rings seals inset on the rear of the plugs, how we do it is, put one plug at the bottom, one at 90deg, remove both plugs, drain oils, fill from the bottom plug until it comes out of the top plug, remove the filler, replace the bottom plug, then the top plug

Syringe works well refilling them,as does warming the oil a bit.

I’ve got a cut down sports drink bottle with the bottom cut off, works surprisingly well, only loose any oil when it over fills!
The JCB drives have 3 plugs, fill - oil level - drain - decent idea!

gear oil pump also works pretty well too ...... failing that an old ATF tubed outlet bottle is pretty fair too

With the weather today I didn't fancy going out so it's postponed until Sunday now. I'll try and post some pictures of what I find.....might help some other novices like myself in the future.

Is there anything that can't be answered on this site?????
