Looks like makita is favorite.... been down to garage at home and suprised to see batteries are similar to my old kit 18v but 5ah as opposed to my old 3ah.
Is this the one then ?
441€

You can put whatever AH batteries you want, but best if they’re the same rating.

I think it's the duc355z I've got. That's got the diy tool less chain tensioner which mine doesn't. You can't beat bolts and a spanner for chain tension imo.
Mines tooless and gave to say it's been very handy just being able to right a detailed chain or clear out a load of crap in the side case on the spot without having to go and get tools. It all works very well.

The Makita tooless system works a lot better than the Stihl, which I detest.

Yes I understood that Bri - just suprised to see them on same style batt ... my kit at home must be a good few years old.

The power head is identical for all models (ignore the specific model numbers, they relate to toolless chain tensioning/bar length/bare unit etc). I just bought the cheapest available at the time, you can always chuck a longer bar on later if you feel the need.

We’re the early ones using a brushed motor? I know mine is brushless but it’s only a few months old.
They are doing a 40v range now, but personally I can’t see the need for it if you are running a sizeable range of 18v kit already and have plenty of batteries.

So 440€
tool less
2 x 5ah batt
Double charger

Amazon

Is that price about right ?

Certainly gone up In price. But probably not far off. The top spec Stihl with batteries and chargers are pushing on £800 so think Makita is a fair price for what it is.

I think I paid about &150 for two 5 ah batteries last year. Three years ago it was £80 for two. Double chargers are about £60 on their own.

its like anything with power tools, once you have a set of batteries for a manufacturer you have to stick with it.

I would like to try the Makita one but my batteries are a bit weak now, they start looking a bit expensive when you add two big batteries and a twin charger. My Stihl ms 181 is total crap, I should never have sold my husqvarna 550xp.

Think @doobin buys aftermarket batteries which are alot cheaper and meant to be good?

What's up with the 181? They are an OK light work saw for the money.

Aye very handy and I'm probably relating it to the stihl version which was/is crap. It's funny how makita brought out the bolted version after the tool less but it could just have been to suit buyers like me.

Waitley brand. Not quite as good as the real thing but at less than half the cost just buy yourself an extra one! 6ah is a good all round size.
So seeing as I have 1 charger already ... a bare saw - 2 waitley batteries and charger might be worth considering 🤔
Edit
Done the sums
Bare saw + genuine makita double charger + 2 waitley 5ah batt = saving of 46€
So it's a no I reckon

That’s what I’d do. Get a double charger.
