Changing Pin sizes

Recently gone from a mini with 25 mm pins to one with 30mm pins - pin centres are same (vclose)and so is dipper width - i want to keep some of my bits from the old machine......Initial thoughts were a mix n match hitch but I want to keep the buckets that came with the new machine with 30mm pins.

So options seem to be open up holes in 25mm buckets / breaker / rake etc or weld some 30mm bar in-between the bosses but will only be able to stick it with the welder through the bosses which might not be strong enough 🤔

Whats peoples thoughts ?

I dont have access to any big drills etc

I've found myself with this dilemma but on a slightly bigger scale 30mm to 50mm then recently swapped from 50 back to 45mm  and just deciding what to do with a bucket I did a swap for that is actually a bucket that would have originally fitted my digger straight away but someone has altered the 80mm pins to 65mm thinking their digger would boss a 20 tonner bucket. So I understand your job. I have all the tooling to achieve the end result but each time I set to I've always reckoned it cheaper to leave buckets as they are and buy ones that fit. Even if you sell the old'uns or in my case keep em to fit another machine. The 20 tonner bucket is gonna be the final straw and i'm gonna buy a 4ft bucket that fits as the work involved seems like too much hassle when I've little time spare at the moment. I'd say alter the hammer and the essential buckets/land rake and leave/ replace the rest. If you are thinking of paying someone to convert them I'd say the breaker and riddle bucket may be the only ones with enough value to warrant conversion as you could pay £150-200 a bucket to have them swapped?

How about getting some 25mm id 30mm od bushes made x dipper width long? Take the pins out and put the bush between the bucket cheeks and put the pins back.

There's a bloke on here just bought a lathe, he be itching to use it  @V8Druid

^ What he said. If pushed, then quick, dirty and cheap I'd gas the holes a bit bigger and weld 30mm stock in. Might even turn 30mm stock down to 25mm one end on the lathe to help with centering and then only need to gas out and weld one side.

But without a decent workshop, cheaper to buy new.

A LOT of work unless you can buy thick wall stock the right size to begin with.

I'd get a 30mm broach and open the holes out to 30mm Kev .... mag drill stand ain't a lot of money for that sort of size and will always be a useful addition to the tool box
the broaches are ground in such a way that they'd self centre in the 25mm holes and then just turn on the magnet ..... did one for Alex's dad from 30 to 35 a while ago and was perfect alignment

Never heard of a mag drill stand, whatss that? Would it grip on such an awkward bit as a bucket cheek?

Nah ... 33mm CHS x 4mm wall has a 25 bore Doob ... bung a reamer through to lose the seam and turn the O/D down to 30mm ...

useful tip for using a broach in a mag stand ... they usually come with a gravity fed coolant pot (too slow / faffy) ... I use a pump up spray bottle (big one in my case - a 10 litre one) ... and run the line to your input port on the mag drill ... need a tap to control flow rate and turn on/off when not cutting .... you need plenty of 'milk' to lube and cool the broach

You may find your pillar drill might be able to do what your looking, failing that id do you graham recommends with the mag drill

I'd just call that a mag drill! I've got one of those, will get some thick plate offcuts for jobs like that.

should also have said that there are hundreds of those 32 /38/40mm mag drills about from budget up to 800 quid versions .... that cheapo one for the occasional use it'd get is probably decent VFM

Cheers Graham.... brilliant info complete with photos 👌
That would be the proper way to do the job - and should ensure proper alignment if I use it sensibly.
I have some other ideas/projects for the 8t on 60mm pins so should prob get one capable of getting a 60mm hole in something.
I suppose even by the time its altered those few bits for the mini digger it will of paid for itself 👍

the magtrons aren't cheap, but I've had that one 20 plus years and used to be in use most days in work ... also had a smaller one as well .. the 100's a lump.
have done plenty of 70mm holes with it .... biggest cutter I have is 90mm ..... they're not cheap when you get up to that size
keep your eyes on ebay for 60mm broaches ..... they do come up

Maybe get the 200 quid job for this task that needs to happen and get some cheeks made for my other 8t ideas if they ever reach fruition 👍
