Gabion baskets

Evening all, pricing a job which will require around 40m run of gabion baskets to retain approx 1.2 high, any advise on how much 2 of us could do in a day and any thing I should be mindful of, need to keep a good face to them but from what I've seen and researched they can be filled to the rear with clean single sized stone which will speed things up, were both pretty handy and I've done a fair bit of sandstone walls, I was thinking around 6m3/day.

Probs not far off at that amount even stone in back of basket is a hand fill job to make sure it's locked in tight to keep basket shape. Use good quality baskets I've seen some recently which had a real thick welded mesh face which would keep straight well. A tip for keeping them straight while you fill them cable tie scaffold tubes across front.

Used to do loads on rail job,......15 year back hated them,mostly doubles
Drop stone in first basket,'stretch' out with two pry bars n chains,fill up with 360 as faced front 9x6,top up stone reckon 6- 8 baskets day each that was mostly ex farm boys who loved the job

Get some terram or other fabric. Put the tensioner wires in middle first and wind them to stop. The bulge, we then faced up the fronts with gaboon stone, put a piece of terram behind and filled rest with cheap hardcore with digger. Our baskets were 1m cubes , half underwater as we were banking a broom. Did 15 on a cold feb day. On the ground out of water could have done twice as many.

Theres two ways of doing Gabions from my experince.
The right way, packing the stone in and getting decent baskets square.
Or the Cheap way, Facing the Baskets and then plonking crap in them.

I hate the bastarding things and refuse to get involved unless there being done properly. A good man fed with stone will do 6 - 7 baskets a day IMHO, but that is grafting. I just recommend the lego blocks now unless access is restricted.... f**k the baskets.

Here’s some I did afew years ago, after 140ton of Stone I forgot how many I did in a day, but some days I was having to hammer the stone apart as it was that frozen together!

Thanks for your replies, the gabions will be seen so need to be done to a good standard so concrete blocks would not be a option , can any one recommend any good suppliers?

Is it not a option to chuck Lego's up, then

or bang the Lego's up and stone face a wall in front

My best advice is wherever is closest to you, transport costs is what makes them expensive in my opinion, as for what they are they are dirt cheap really!

Been checking online and second hand ones might be an option but like you say transport can be the issue. There is a few guys I've got prices from and there is a difference in cost locally. What should I be paying for them?

I've seen that size, from 50 quid upwards .. new ......but as said, the shipping is the killer, as so few on a truck
also with s/hand ... there are many different interlock shapes

If you can get from the same lot should be ok, fairhurst in Lockerbie do new ones for £65 on eBay. Lovie construction products trying to get £92 EA for smaller ones is worth shopping out about.

Friend recently did a wall, 900 blocks in total and nearly £5k in transport

Might be worth asking local volumetric mixer guys, a lot have the moulds and make some up when they have quite days.

£5.50 a block then for tranny ..... excellent value .... couldn't have been dragging them far

I got my blocks from some guy in Manchester.... was about £60 a block delivered I think
