Is the problem poor preparation /application or paint that's not fit for purpose?
Poor preparation IMO. In the case of @Lancs Lad tb216. You can see the primer on the counterweight where it's been damaged, you'd literally have to get an angle grinder on it to get the paint off. Whereas alot of the time where you see sheets of paint coming off there's no primer at all. Looks like it's been sprayed straight on to bare metal. You don't see cars driving around with sheets of paint coming off and most of them spend their life outdoors all the time so it can be done but just think it's shoddiness/costs cutting going on from the manufacturers and as Ollie says we should be kicking off much more but then a handful of owner ops won't make much difference when hire companies are offering machines by the hundred and probably don't give a toss about the paint.

I do indeed. Although I do recall it did do a bit of living in a shed.

Found the private sale of the 2023 TB219 last night 😉 it is absolutely mint but knowing who has had it - it's likely been in a shed.
It did spend stretches of time in a shed but it had still had done 1700hrs when I sold it with alot of time out left on ongoing walling jobs sometimes months long And even the shed had persistent damp blowing in mist, for whatever reason it's just has aged incredibly well. Dunno if it helped or made any difference but I often wipe machines down with a rag and wd40 to clean them up a bit/get grease/residue off..

When it comes to resale/trade in time you get no more money for a mint owner op machine than you do a battered hire machine! (Until you come to purchase said ex owner op machine and you pay through the nose for it!!)

Talking more when you try and px in at a main dealer.. they couldn’t care less!
Indeed, trading your machine at the main dealer feels like they are literally laughing at you. Lowball offerings, comparing your machine to some auction machine result thats lower spec, twice the hours and not looked after. Its almost like they don't think their own product is worth anything.....
But they still want to sell you a new one which, oh by the way, the price has just gone up, or there's about to be a price increase - its a joke.
But selling your machine to an independent might get you a better price, but if your new machine is delayed - as mine was - you could be left for months without a machine at all! Which you wouldn't have if you had the deal with the dealer. So its swings and roundabouts I guess.

Mate of mine locally bought a brand new 20t jcb . Apparently he was told the jcb yellow was a primer and topcoat . Didn’t stop it falling off though ! Jcb had to repaint it under warranty , done properly locally by the guys that painted my hitachi

Got my engcon unit been refurbished due to paint issues from new, What they don’t take into consideration/reimburse is the 4wks it’s been away not having it when you need it
Just got a update from jack at hullplant who is refurbing unit, Will be another 2wks yet as one of the worst units he has seen for corrosion!

Now tell me how can this be the case with it only being under 2 yr old (80hrs) and It has been stored in w/shop majority of its life with me from new 🤷‍♂️🤯

6weeks to strip and repaint? That’s nonsense!

Mines 9 years old all I’ve done to it is repaint the solenoid cover on it, not touched it anywhere else at all! Really impressed by it tbf! No rust spread from where I’ve knocked it. Hope the new one is as good..

Now tell me how can this be the case with it only being under 2 yr old (80hrs) and It has been stored in w/shop majority of its life with me from new 🤷‍♂️🤯

You could strip and repaint an engcon in a couple of days, it’s not a digger!

Sounds like an excuse to me.

paint wise the wacker is very good apart from a bit of the grey on the side skirts around sharp light slot edges etc certainly better than most, honestly have never had such a trouble free 10y since we gone to kubota and wackers and away from the JCB stuff, its not brand loyalty either,i was all jcb aat one time,but the kubotas have been near faultless (although ive never really liked driving them) the wacker has been brillant so far, we had about 12y of all jcb and I was always pissing about on a weekend with injector pump, hydraulic pumps, electrical gremlins etc, be buggered if im going to fly the yellow flag if they're substandard :(
done a ktm haven't they...
