next time you do ... work out the percentage over the quoted price and deduct that amount off the quoted price and pay that ..... when they query it... you say it's ok for them to arbitrarily add on X% over the quote so you thought you'd arbitrarily deduct the same percentage off the quote ... goose and gander

When I used to use Travis for all my building materials on average I had a monthly credit note of£400!

I use Ridgeons and I refused to have an account for years because when I had an account with marlows who they bought out ,The bill at end of month was often higher than what they told me when I got the quote and I had often billed out job at quoted price +my bit
So for years I would get goods and pay for on mastercard with quoted price and still get at least 4 weeks to pay and without a account they could not look back and see what I had paid before but if they were a bit high I use to find best price in truck. Now ridgeons have been taken over by Huws Gray and without at least a cash account they will not give a penny discount

Speaking of clowns rang a company in Oxford for a price for loose type 1 per ton for their price to be £98 plus vat

Not the best of stuff but as we had a job in st austell we were collecting 803 from brookland fine on a dry day rubbish on wet day £8.90 + vat per tonne

I’v got at least 3 limestone quarries within 5 mins and and a couple of friends with lorries so usually get pretty decent prices

I find with any merchant you need to call them first, sometimes from there car park, to haggle with the sales office before you went in, the bloke on the counter has limited discount as he has a contained customer!!

To be honest. It's race to the bottom and it's a waste of time.

Gave up looking for the cheapest a couple years ago..... I now use one firm for Reclaimed Aggregate, and one for new aggregate, same with diesel.

All three will go the extra mile to accommodate us for a one off load the same day.... was even lent a 7.5t tipper this year as they where short on drivers but it let them get the load to me

When the customer wants to dick around playing the cheapest game, I get to sit around on dayworks until it arrives

I get this every day in the plumbing and heating trade. Customers want to self supply boilers and radiators they’ve seen online. When they order the wrong bits or things are missing they expect me to sort it. Its getting now that I lose interest when they start mentioning labour only.

I like a lot of builders got caught with a full tax investgation and the taxman said when you buy materials and pay for other trades we will add x amount mark up to materials and labour when I pushed him to say how much they expect us to add he would not say so I said if I add 10% would you be happly he just said yes ,So after that if I supplied material I would add 10% if custermer said no He will get them I would charge my time for putting right his cockups,but most custmers reckond I would get materials with my 10% cheaper than they could

I think plumbers charge quite enough for their labour. I begrudge someone charging a huge markup on stuff I could just as easily order myself: my money is just as good as theirs. Having said that, I wouldn’t expect a tradesman to sort out my errors for nothing.

Especially when they take the piss, 1k for a straight swap on a boiler labour only

Like any trade, you’re paying for the knowledge and skills not just the time. I have a percentage mark up on anything I supply but its not a daft amount.

I do agree with you ....... but the plumbers round here really do take the piss ... most of 'em drive Porsches ...... if I'd charged the rate levels they do I'd never have had any work ..... and we were providing some equally serious skill sets .... with less competition than the local plumber's cartel

In my Nearest small town there’s probably 15 other plumbing/heating engineers so plenty of competition. I’d say I’m not the cheapest or fastest but will stand by anything I do. I don’t advertise, most of my customers come from word of mouth.

I’ve been asked A couple of times if I’d go out on hire with my E10, but (rightly or wrongly) I can make better money from the plumbing/gas work and leave the digger safe at home.

Got a new build on atm. Bloody plumbers can't get a goodun for love or money. Got an older guy I normally use but he's set in his ways. Ok on renovations and alterations. I want an all manifold set up on this place for both heating and hot water. Anyway a lot of one man band guys are not VAT registered. I supply and just want labour only in this instance. Otherwise I'm losing the vat for a start.
