Wall chasing for electricity cables etc.

Hi Folks,

So, quick question for the builders amongst you Do you guys track walls for services yourselves or sub it out to a specialist?

I've done it before when i was a youngster working for people, it was hard work then, but i see wall chasers for sale now? enlighten me?

All depends on how much it's a hateful job but chasers like everything aren't dear anymore
Metabo one is ok. But there's cheaper and dearer it's one of the few tools I'd not bother with cordless on.
Get a decent dust extraction and a mask and crack on.

We have a Metabo chaser and Metabo extractor. Does what work we need for pipes. Certainly wouldnt think of subbing it out. Would be temped with the Dewalt 54v Cordless one.. but cordless extractors are not great.. so if you have the mains out for that then you might as well use mains on the machine. The extractor has power take off which shuts the extractor down when you stop the machine.

I've an old Hitachi 1, the only thing I'd say is get 1 with at least a 125mm disc as as soon as the disc starts wearing i found you struggle to get the depth for 25mm back boxes

Think ours will do 40mm depth on the 125mm blade?

Remember that we use "proper" concrete blocks over here and not the Celcon cheese used elsewhere
There's not many of the wall chasing machines last long on these. KDM Hire do the better Hilti corded unit if you wanted to try it, but I think its only for conduit tracks and not boxes.
Personally I'd sub it out to someone to slog at it. You've Tony O'Gara "Track Attack Wall Tracking" and Shandun Industrial Services, both based in and around Omagh, if you wanted to contract it out.

Oh and if you are living in the house ..enjoy plaster dust cornflakes for a few weeks and you'll find the dust in places you never imagined

First house I ever did I fired up Stihl saw and went wild! Probably took afew years off my life in doing so. Don’t do much renno now it’s mostly full strip or new build , just dab board over with no need to chase out. Only 10mm or so on sockets

Same, 35mm box set in 10mm.. can’t remember last place we did without flat plates tbh.

With the usb sockets you need deep back boxes. The media plate back boxes I did in my last place were 47mm deep!

Honeywell T6 stats need a 47mm back box . PITA!

I've fit USB faceplates from Screwfix etc in my place and they fit in fairly easily, I'm sure the backbox wasn't that deep?

I did have to take a bit more out for a decent dimmer switch that will work with LEDs though.

For normal usb doubles then 35mm should be fine, I think 25mm are too shallow for some because of the electrical kit on back of the socket. In certain areas I fitted these ones that used a specific 47mm back box, and have blanks where I added usb point/cat6 and tv aerial points. Went a bit mad with cable ducts too with the idea of future proofing should anything new come along…..then sold the house!
