Powder coating- Your views

What’s everybody‘s views on this? I see Weidemaan boast how good theirs is, and I’ve been advised that JCB have improved their processes (lets hope so). However, can it ever be superior to a quality traditional paint job, in terms of longevity? Doesn’t it all just peel off in sheets sooner or later?

As with everything, prep is key. PPC is an incredibly durable coating, but offers zero rust protection. Get the rust protection and prep right and you’ve got a good system I think?

Not sure the JCB finishes are PPC, more just a water based paint with no primer? Poor prep and a recipe for disaster.

They use it on a lot of off road gear seemingly with little problem think ARB bumpers are powder coat and take a lot of abus e

powder coat is fine as long as it is a totally sealed treatment ..... scratch it through and it's an invitation to water ... and it sucks it in .. capillary style

PPC has no prep other than ensuring a clean, rust free surface James, AFAIK .. straight to bare clean metal, hot ... if it doesn't sustain any physical damage it's brilliant

But it can be put over Galv and I’ve been told over zinc based primer? But maybe it’s not the same coating they are using over the primer?

I’ve had some bits powder coated, done right it’s as chip resistant as paint, and I’ve found no issues with it peeling after being chipped. Mind you, for what the outfit that we use charges, it should be gold plated.

yeh .. our local galvers offer it as a finish ... but the galv needs pickling, washing and drying first ... adds a seeeeerious cost to stuff

Personal opinion, It's probably very good done right.... but i've yet to see it ever done right.

JCB, Thwaites, Bobcat..... and when it fails (which it inevitably does) the paint falls off in sheets leaving unprimed steel in it's wake

If such a finish was offered as an optional extra, then within reason, I’d gladly pay for it. However, I look to keep machines for the long run, I suppose for folks buying fleets of dumpers that’s are likely to get thoroughly abused, perhaps it just wouldn’t be worthwhile.

Tbh I don't think it matters what you did with a hire dumper someone would find a way to wreck it just for the hell of it

Poor paint still spoiling what is actually a good product in many cases. Very sad

How old is the machine please? I’ve been looking at a new JCB machine, and I specifically asked the question about paint and was told things had improved. If they haven’t then I’ll not be buying, but I would want to tell them why.

September 2016 , and like you I asked the same question to the production manager at the factory in his office prior to buying If the paint process was ‘fixed’ and he promised me it had been, and yet it’s still poor! In fact I’m still waiting a call back from him to explain to me why mine has failed multiple times!
Bloody shame as I’d argue it’s the best 5 tonner on the market!

Yes, that doesn’t look good. I’m sure steel ain’t what it used to be either, which makes a good paint job even more important.

Nothing’s what used to be, maybe we should just get used to it? But it’s so depressing seeing paint fall off a machine you’ve spent a LOT of money on! JCB aren’t the only offenders though, many others suffer the same woes.

and yet car manufacturers manage to achieve outstanding levels of paint finish ..... with some even warranting it for donkey's years ... there really is no excuse for the shoddy crap finishes they pass off as acceptable

I don't know if others have noticed it but everyone I know wants a metallic van as the white vans rust so much quicker and worse than the metallic paint
I wonder if the same would apply to plant It would be an expensive experiment to find out but sure I've seen a couple of silver and gold metallic machines
