Depends which way you look at it.
The old shape Sorento had a 3.5t towing capacity, and proper 4wd with a transfer box.
So in that way it's gone down hill a bit.

Yeah, I had a Mk1 Sorento, bought from auction at a good price. Was a good tug and surprisingly well balanced with full load on the trailer. Suspension rarely squatted, but I'm told they had a rather annoying flaw of a suspension mount rotting out prematurely and dumping the rear axle.

They were a bit "sparse" by todays standards. Guess the extra creature comforts on the new models add weight and is reflected in the towing capacity.

I think the skoda yetti has a reasonable tow capacity for a smaller car. I thought about it but I cant seem to look past a green oval.

I had a proper Skoda in the 90s before they got interfered with by the Germans . Part awesome and part awful!

As to the Yeti, towing capacity very much depends on the particular model & year some of the last 4WD Diesels were actually 2100 Kg max, Bri - what is the heaviest in reality that they are comfortable with? I read of an 85% rule but does this more apply to caravans. as no real wind load on a digger.
Considered Jimny - belive you have had one as well, but could do with 750 Kg unbraked to tow the Gopher legally as well - rules out the Jimny unless skeleton braked trailer built for Gopher. Dacia Duster also 750 Kg unbraked as is Mk 2 Peugot Expert Van / Citroen equivalent (Gopher like Powerfab but 180 swing)

Heck you'd need some b@lls to tow anything over a wheelbarrow in a Jimmy.

Don't get me wrong I love Jimmy's...and likely will have one in the stable this summer for our kid.
But towing with one must be fun

The yeti shares some of the golf platform. Of a similar size would be the Vw Tiguan, depending on engine/model they have upto a 2500kg tow capacity.

I’m close to the 1300 kg limit with the Kubota and three or four buckets, no problem at all towing, as long as you aren’t in a rush or likely to encounter any long steep hills.

OldOp, I never towed 1800 with the Skoda, but it was rock steady whatever I did put behind it, and it didn’t hang about. Mine was a 62 plate, before they changed the lights and upped the power.

750kg unbraked only applies if the drawing vehicle is 1500kgs or more ... other wise it is 50% of the drawing vehicle if unbraked

There’s someone near me that used to run a Daihatsu fourtrak towing a fully loaded IW at 3.5T, that looked dodgy but was legal!

I towed an unbraked ifor p6e behind my sj410 a few times, once with a load of hard-core for a soak away, wouldn't have wanted that weighing
Paid 240 quid for that, 100 quid for an mot and a down pipe then did 1500 miles in it in 6 weeks before it went pop

They were good tow trucks actually for their size. Did work experience back in the day with a trees outfit up in Scotland and he ran two fourtraks went all over one towing a chipper and the other a tipping trailer which when full of chip with sides on was heavy. 2.8l engines if I recall ...
