Yes, But you'll generally get away with some painting. The plus side is there are a lot of both of those wagons in Africa in particular. Parts are easy to find

But my point was most modern pickups with a lift and decent tyres are surprisingly capable these days ...with the big bonus of happily doing hundreds of miles a day at 80mph. We do trips down to Anglesey no sweat or Hampshire like I'm at the minute with no hassle.

For Africa Toyota is gonna be your friend

Imagine some forums the green oval guys would be screaming blue murder and tearing hair out at the fact that we don't think only a defender is capable enough to go off road

volkswagons parts can be found anywhere ,but comfort would be first priority ,somewhere to kip tidy ,somewhere to make tea etc

They did do the square boxy land cruiser as a 2 door station wagon with pop top roof. Whether it was aftermarket or not I don't know. That would be a fair compromise I think.
If looking at reliability then I would strongly discount the 4wd sprinters. They have terrible rot problems and electrical gremlins. Their rudimentary ECU's are getting old now, or you are into addblue age

I had just over two years in Mozambique, three months in Tanzania, went through S Africa, Zim, Malawi many times. Forget MK’s, I had a job to keep six running 30 years ago due to parts shortages. Remember they’ve been out of production decades now and metal does fatigue, especially axles, springs and hangars. Unimogs? Good support for Mercs in most countries , but there aren’t many mogs and there’ll be very little parts support in the areas where you’re going to break down. Toyota 70- or 100-series, parts all the way through Africa, not that you’ll need many. There’s a reason NGO’s, rebel forces and terrorists use them. I did a lot of miles in them, mostly on unsurfaced roads, but you Pay your money and take your chances.

PS didn’t see one VW of any description away from the bigger cities. You can’t get parts everywhere.

So a guy I follow on the old Instagram has a 4X4 MAN TGM18.280 with home built off adventure quarters on the back, he's driving from the UK to Australia currently in Kyrgyzstan, it's an impressive build that he did by himself, and he's taking this thing in some really impressive places.

Merc 814D 4x4 this one for sale soon as he’s building a unimog one.

I toured with bands all over Europe in 814 vans brilliant for moving around with lots of ppl and equipment.

Mates got an old mobile library on man chasis converted into a camper that’s pretty neat

On the iveco 4x4 page the typical cost of a new camper is about £250k which is bonkers for retirees to go up a dirty track or up to odd ski resort.

My joiner who’s 58 just dropped £100k into a new 7.5m plastic fantastic only goes max 2 hour drive away lol since Covid the cost of campers seems to have x3 etc
