Drawbar on a 32ton 8x2 Grab Tipper

Hi,
As anyone pulled a machine of any sort loaded on a drawbar plant trailer being pulled by an unloaded 32ton grab tipper ?

Looking at what sort of capacity it'd tow legally without any muck on the tipper.

I might be wrong but would think with a drawbar spec lorry it would be 44t max gtw, minus the 32t gross lorry leaving 12t gross for trailer? I guess if the trailer was specced high enough you could carry more on that if the lorry wasn’t loaded as long as axle weights were still ok.

With an hgv combination you would remove the lorries actual weight rather than potential weight so would be 44t minus 17t leaving 27t for trailer and digger.
People do do it. Not grabs but viridor move a 14t Volvo used for stock pilling sewage sludge behind a renualt 8 wheel bulker. There is someone on face book that runs a grab with drawbar for moving a variety of machines around from 13t down and a backhoe. There are a few who move 13t machines behind 18t wagons as well on Facebook. Greenwoods trees and Shoreham diggers I think.

Common round here...
Roocrofts do it behind grab and 8legger tipper towing all sorts.
NMS run their big wurtgen behund their barn door tippers.

Mate of mine has one but more commonly he uses demountable tipper/beaver tail combo ...which is butt clenching to load a 13t onto in the wet...high...🫣

Ace.... thats what I was thinking..... finding a grab with drawbar set up would be the hardest thing to find..... I can't imagine it being retro fitted cheaply.!

A drawbar trailer will be 25t max gross weight, 3 axles at 8 ton each, plus 1 ton nose weight, should give a payload of 19/20ton.
If the truck is plated for 44t train, it would need to tare at less than 19t to utilise the full trailer weights.

Biggest problem would be that a standard grab will have less gears and higher ratio axles. If you can't find one I reckon a 8x4 hookloader drawbar spec (not to uncommon) and swap the hook gear out for a grab and tipper would give you a nicer lorry to drive.

As @Mogman says fitting is not a massive problem, your biggest hurdle is finding one already plated for train weight.
Uprating should be possible, but it will be a notifiable alteration, and require testing, you would be worth speaking to a chassis modifier or a paper work specialist like sv tech before shelling out on a particular truck. Some may be bolt the coupling on, some may need changes to brake control valves, air tanks, truck brakes, ecu`s.

Good luck at finding a second hand 3 axle draw bar lowloader, I’ve been looking for over a year & only two have popped up but missed the pair of them

think this may be pushing the boundaries a tad .... front axle doesn't look to be doing quite its fair share :unsure:

I’ve borrowed a double axle chieftain off a mate who had one sat in the corner of the yard & is in for test at the moment.
I’ve had the hubs off & greased the bearings, new S cams & bushes, 8 new rims & tyres, hydraulic power pack & welded a 57mm hitch on that I got from it Williams & when I was checking it over to take to the garage the abs valve was leaking from corrosion so in all it’ll be cheaper to buy a brand new one

Can you see about having them chopped ?? There isn't an awful lot to them. A straw hauler I know ordered 3 6 wheelers the longest he could get and 3 drags as long as available. After getting on vosas radar he had a chunk cut out the middle of all the drags. Didn't take them long.
