so called around that way from Sudbury where I’d already loaded up the transit and Colchester where I’d collected a new slew ring for the crane and a remote control driver module

That looks fun to fit…
Have teeth broken off your slew ring somehow?

I just don't get the obsession of making things like that electronic.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
They are nice to drive through. And it solves the problems that some lorries with auto boxes have with roll back. Just hit the throttle and go
the Kia has an 'autohold' feature ... when set, as long as you come to a halt, with your foot on the brake, it holds it, 'til you give it some juice again ...
got a couple of uphill junctions 'round here that'd prove exciting / more interesting and makes them a doddle - and yes one can always hold on the clutch, but to get the hand brake off you must have pressure on the footbrake pedal
also very handy in traffic queues .. just stop and it sits, brakes on, 'til you gas it .. I have to say I like it

My disco is the same, auto hold and elec handbrake, it does make for a nice drive, the only problem I have with it is if it’s on ā€˜hold’ it’s never hard to just nudge ever so slightly ie when hitching up a trailer! You can turn it off obviously but who bothers to do that šŸ˜‚

My truck is 3 years old, due it's first test in 2 weeks. Not once has the handbrake been applied. (It's auto)
It annoys me you can't put it in nuteral without engine started too.

In terms of lorries, I've not driven many autos but those I have that roll back just add a smidge of throttle before you release the hbrake.

It doesn't work on all of them as they have interlocks to stop you burning the clutches out with the handbrake on. Or you have MAN gearboxes that just have a mind of there own and seem to flick themselves into neutral for no apparent reason or take forever to select a gear, generally just horrible horrible gearboxes.
The new Volvo's are more akin to driving a discovery than lorry. The gearbox is always in the right gear and ready to go. No roll back no indecisiveness. Can barely feel the gear changes. Nothing like lorries of old.
