Anyone using electric diggers?

I'm doing some research as part of Electic Cities project into the shift toward zero-emission working (and the ups-and-downs of it)

I'm trying to get in touch with operators/contractors currently using electric diggers to ask a few questions. I can offer modest cash incentives for taking part in the research.

Please let me know if you fit this bill

(and yes, I have seen the 'zero emission my arrrrsssse' video :D)

A mate has a electric forklift for in his yard, but beyond that it's unlikely.... I'll take the cash incentive though :love:

A few key large plant hire companys in London areas are running electric excavators / dumpers and compact loading shovels

Doesn't the battery operated 1.9t JCB only have a run time of 2 hours?

I would like electric gear , I looked at the electric Wacker nuesson micro but it needs 3phase supply. I enquired about a battery dumper but it was £22,000 instead of the £8000 diesel ones. I like the look of the battery, remote control, tracked carriers but the 500kg one is £13000 and has no tip or lifting capability so it's all a little dear or impractical for me.

All of this stuff is great for the irregular user the video on Facebook is a great example of where it does not work but these firms need the PR of being green and so on

It’s not somthing I see taking off anytime soon unless they run on the generator but then they need cables dragging behind them which is it’s own risk in itself

Seen there was a few hybrid takeuchis, were they either diesel or run on electric but as you said needed to be constantly hooked up to a generator which limits their range and leads to issues of cables running through the site. Although if it's inside closed buildings the negatives are probably outweighed by the zero emissions

Leccy diggers're nothing new though .... was an electric 110RB in Trefyl Quarry when i was a kid ... had a cable as thick as a man's leg running it from a substation on site

they will be coming and will be a good thing too.

100KWH battery pack is the barest minimum needed (gives a tesla 300 miles, single 150HP motor driving the pump etc) and would fit a 5 tonner, the problem users are going to have is how to charge it quickly enough. 30 mins on a rapid charger gives 80% charge but how the hell do you get western power to provide you a temporary site 250000 watt supply is where it all falls down.

I always thought that a sensible halfway point would be a diesel engine with reasonable battery backup using electric rams, motors etc. Not perhaps on a large machine, 15-20 tonne, but on a smaller one.

The advantage of electric motors is that if you run them backwards then they are a generator. For every lift of the boom you drop it, why not recover the energy?

Every digger has an enormous counterweight, which could be called lead acid batteries. They are tougher than lithium and obviously their weight is an advantage.

No fancy brushless motors with a filing cabinet full of electronics but a set of series motors with contactors, nice and simple. Ball screws for rams, but possibly a rack and gear instead, motors are motors.

I don't think they will have any option bar to go for hydrogen fuel cells for site equipment
Obviously mining equipment is easy to go electric
And some site equipment
The small electric machines have there places too for utility gangs that may only require an hour a day use
also I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see battery beaver packs trench compactors and the like with multiple battery's stored on the van
There are battery chainsaws and hedgecutters doing far more work per day than some of this kit does

two hundred and fifty kilowatts ?? :oops::eek: ... the grid ain't gonna support many of them in a square mile :rolleyes: and I would not wanna be paying the bill for it ....tha's 250 units of leccy per hour at say 19p/unit .... tha's £47.50 per hour to charge it ..roughly :eek:
