My trusty Leica rugby 400dg has had enough, bought it 2nd hand over 10years ago so its done o.k.

Will level itself up but then instead of rotate we get this error code.

I'm guessing the party is over ?

Seems like the problem is this little motor sticking, top off and a little assist when it's trying to spin and it goes, might keep us going another week :)

Just send it off somewhere and give them a maximum budget to spend on it, got to be worth chucking £100 at it? Good lasers!
Finding someone to send it to round here would be difficult - little motor wouldn't be hard to change and a gentle nudge sets it spinning so im thinking get a new laser and try find a replacement motor for this.

Hi All,

Rotary Lasers on start-up typically use the individual X & Y axis stepper motors first to self-level the Laser head and then as soon as it is level, the drive motor engages and spins the laser head up to 300 / 600 / 900 RPM etc.
I therefore suspect that it is the drive motor that has failed or is failing and cannot operate which is why it then fires the head speed warning as it is not rotating.

We are not Leica Dealers and so I cannot pull the exact error code data for you - but this is what I think is taking place.

The issue you "may" have is finding the availability of spare parts and or anyone to carry out the work. As I say, sadly we cannot do it as we are not Leica Dealers.

I think your right and it looks like we have found a replacement which I can sort myself.
Is there a forum discount for a new Laser and do you have any issues shipping in the eu ?

Yes, the Spectra GL422N would be a natural replacement for the Leica 400DG.

The code planttalk can be entered at the Checkout (below Billing Address in section 5) to get 5% off.

We can ship all over the world so that is not an issue.

If I am correct in believing you are located in France, you will not pay UK VAT @ 20% and the Checkout will adjust the pricing when you select your delivery country. You will pay a delivery cost of £49.00 GBP and it's on a 3-6 Working Day Service.

However, when the kit arrives in France, DHL will charge you import VAT at the local rate (I believe in France it's also 20%) as well as a small handling fee.
This has to be paid before the product will be delivered.

Best regards

Thanks Mark - i will have a look at the situation here - we are VAT reg , sometimes DHL have charged VAT other times nothing and, once charged something like £300 import duty on a £650 item.

DHL tend to be very good. FedEx/TNT specifically in France are a "challenge" shall we say.

All I can presume is that the export paperwork was completed incorrectly on whatever that £650 item was. The issue is resolving it after the event which is nigh on impossible.

I have that topcon laser, mine has the remote control with it also. Brilliant bit of kit, I’ve never once come to it and it needed charging before a days use, nor has it ever ran out on me!
The receiver takes 1 x AA battery which does run out quickly, but I keep a pack in the box!

Where as my Brikkies spectra is always plugged into the mains!

I have remote for my leica but have never used it so that's not a deal-breaker ... actually kind of fancy the squaring up feature but they only have a 3k version in spectra with this option unless you go down the fuduka route, but I prefer to stay with a top brand.

The topcon receiver has a smaller window than the spectras top option. I have a leica road eye 160 and now being use to that I would hate to use anything with a smaller window

I think my topcon does +/- 50mm but I’m rarely that far out 😆
I have a spectra mag mount but i do find ot very slow to figure out which way it wants to go!
