I learnt to drive Draglines on Blackwells to start with it was when to driver wanted a break to go to the phone (before mobiles and wanted to keep the jib swinging as it was fitted with a silent granger man then I was seen by the foremen driving it so after that I was relief driver and use to drive them on occasions In Uk in the sixties draglines were mainly RB and a few Smiths and cranes were mainly NCKs by the seventies a lot of different cranes were imported

Smiths of Rodley ... made a LOT of cranes in their day - crawlers, a lot of railway cranes, wheeled yard cranes and the odd mobile, truck mounted

Interesting, over here there were more RB’s and Preistmans, with the odd NCK thrown in.

going back to the initial topic universal rope excavators and draglines what could you kindly tell me about it, I believe that rope and excavators are used in river works to extract gravel from riverbeds or for maritime and port dredging works, perhaps positioned and fixed on pontoons floats I honestly have never had the opportunity to see a dragline in action I don't know the function and the sequence of maneuvers thanks regards

On the outskirts of Leeds at St Aidens was one of the biggest mining mess ups the country has ever known, yet not many know about it, probably as no-one died (I don't think).
They were using open cast for coal and went too close to the river Aire which burst into the mine completely filling it and ending all operations there. It's now a nature reserve.
The dragline is still sat there at the side, it's a Bucyrus Erie called Oddball and was once featured on 'Abandoned Engineering'.
If you use all those key words ^ in Google you'll be able to read all about it or watch on YT. How you'd find the programme to watch on TV I don't know, but it's out there.
It's quite an interesting story.

I’d love a shot of a drag line . We all think we are Archie today with hydraulic excavators but the work done with draglines these guys must of been unbelievably skilled .
