I'll have to measure it and let you know. A rough idea is 20mm wear plate leading edge 2 to 3 inch

I have had to do quite a lot of tree and stump removal with the JCB 1CX and the Haulotte. Given our trees are virtually all hardwood, ranging from very hard to f%$#ing hard, I've found a strong narrow digging bucket, preferably with sharp teeth the best. Generally go around the stump tearing off the roots as close to the stump as possible. The advantage of the bucket is that you use the back of the bucket as a fulcrum, levering up the teeth to break the root. You can also, as has been mentioned, remove the soil to see where you are working.
And when you break all the roots you can use the levering method again with the bucket to lift out the stump.
I do like that root rat/wurzel thing but not sure if it would get through our hardwoods.

Thanks for all the replies,I think I will go ahead and order a root ripper,my only concern is the tooth itself not being a standard bucket tooth, butto be fair the price is so keen for a 3 tonner it’s got to be worth a try.

Undermined it with the Tilty and a narrow bucket, ripper is no use when the roots go down like that.

The one I made has done a great job (better then the cone splitter:rolleyes:) but if I made another one would make the back part of the ‘blade’ wider than the leading edge so as you pull it through it opens the wood out(y)
Also I make it out of thick plate mine is only 40 mm:cautious: and I’ve bent the tip to the side slightly:(

This is my one. Made out of 20 mm wear plate on the bits where it is supposed to be sharp. Hope you can read the rusty tape measure. ☺

The most annoying part of it all is the arborist who cuts down the tree in the first place
Leave 6-8ft of the trunk and life would be soooo much easier, then cut the rest of the trunk up on the ground
Leverage is a great help:)

Depends. A lot of the time the tree will just snap off, so you then want to take it down real low to avoid damaging any boom hoses whilst you get the ripper on it. But best to have the option to start with.
