Old benford dumper hydrsulic oil type?

Hi all,

Got my 1989 3t benford dumper and shes doing great. She has s leak on steering ram that I havent fixed yet, so I need to top up hydraulic fluid.

It's currently got green oil leaking, which upon searching suggests its lhm or mineral oil. How do i know what to use? Should I go with this?

You can get green UTTO (universal tractor transmission oil) which is essentially Super Universal. I can’t see that doing your dumper any harm, any oil is better than no oil!

We run all ours on standard 46 hydralic oil (2 benfords on the fleet and another 2 we look out for with a timber contractor elsewhere), UTTO will do, it's only a basic gear pump.

Brake system will be Mineral Only! however. Synthetic causes serious seal problems within the axles... not relevant I know but worth remembering!

Hi all,

Thanks for your advice. I've stripped off the leaking endcap, and found the seal was far too small. I've picked up a new seal and hope to refit tomorrow (weather permitting!). I've attached a photo.

Can anyone advise the general procedure for refilling the system, and bleeding please?

It has a hose at each end of the ram, i assume pumping fluid in either end, depending on whether it needs to extend or contract? So how does the air purge out to allow the ram to refill? I'm going to drop the drain plug on the tank and refill with fresh 46.

Sorry if this is a really stupid question.

connect it all up and fully extend and retract it several times.....basically switch on and full left lock and right lock a few times. They are self purging.

A wire, inserted through the slot in the cylinder tube, you turn the end cap to pull the wire round. Can be either round or square section, that one looks like a round one? Ideally they require a new wire each time they are assembled, but can be made to go again if necessary.

Yes, this. Bit strange - looks like a piece of coat hanger! Hydraulic shop by me didnt have anything to suit so the old one is going back in for now.

well I looked at that and thought ..... no way is that gonna hold the end cap in .... bit like a circular clip on a ball joint on a gas strut or a throttle linkage ball joint ... didn't look man enough to deal with the forces involved ... have to admit to never having seen an end cap held in that manner B4

I agree. Doesnt feel strong enough but I guess it must be! I've just popped it back on with the new seal and no more leaking

The endcap does have slight play so its clearly not a real tight clamp with that wire but it's on. May look for a replacement.

You haven’t lived come across a lot like that can be a right pain in the arse getting them out at times when the wire snaps it’s hook off rather than turning with the cap

used to 'split' dozens of cylinders, a year, for a local hyd.s place ..... never seen one o' them ... possibly 'cos they could actually manage to part them themselves

I can say the brakes were the best part of it when i bought it. Then when i unloaded it i relized the centre pin was snapped. When i split it to do the pin i never sorted the brakes out.
At least you know the brakes should work if you put a master cylinders on it

buy him a lucky rabbit's foot to hang on the dash .. be much cheaper too
