Thanks for this thread!

I live near Ledbury and have been very tempted by a couple of his machines. Yes they are all very old, but i only have a 6k budget and, like you, am a first time buyer with only really small jobs around the smallholding to complete. It seems to be a difficult end of the market to buy from.

I haven't committed to going to see one as i was a bit suspicious about lack of feedback as a seller on ebay. He also never replies to questions and you have to buy cash and not through ebay. I did extensive searching but it is very hard to find reviews online. All very suspicious. The only good point seemed to be he is 15 minutes from me. I'm really sorry to hear about your issues, but thanks so much for the forewarning. I think i'll steer clear.

I've only been on this site a couple of hours, and thanks to the great members, been given the history of a dodgy machine i've looked at, and got the lowdown on purple bug. Saved me a potential fortune!

<slight hijack> If anyone could point me to a good dealer, or machine in the gloucestershire/south west/m4 m5 area that would be great!

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike have had a few issues with mine but gradually getting it sorted.
As you are looking at older machines have a good look at the condition of the tracks not just the amount of tread they have, make sure the rubber around the cleats is not to perished and that no cleats are missing. Hope this helps you.
The guys on here are really knowledgeable they certainly helped me.

I was just in the market for one recently. I really feel sorry for anyone buying a 2nd hand digger, its a mine field. 2 out of 5 are scammers. You think you found a great one in your price range then see (+ vat). The best ones are otherside of the country so you need to factor transit in. Then you have these purplebug guys offering free nationwide shipping but they send you a lemon.

Nice to see all these members offering their help, and im sure you will make a decent machine out of it one fix at a time. Really good forum this (y)

'S a fact .....
had a 500 mile round trip to view the 'Drema ..... in Norwich ... WTF is everything worth buying always in bloody Norwich :( (@tinydigger ) :p:LOL:

Think Ebay, as a medium for buying anything sizable from, is nose diving, due to their own complacency with the huge volume of scammers.
can report a listing as a scam and damn me it'll be on again in hours ..... pretty sure computer technology can spot a duplicate with a different ID:mad:

as said .... a bloody minefield .. you have to travel to find what you want, but there is no such thing as a bargain anywhere any more :(

I was looking for my digger for about 2 weeks and would report them to ebay and gumtree as I came across them, but they would still be up 3 or 4 days later. I dont think they care too much unfortunately. I ended up buying locally, got a decent deal, probably not steal of the century but he let me dig in his yard with the machine for half an hour, came TER checked etc. Worth it for the piece of mind. I did see purplebug but his deals seemed almost too good to be true. Cheap machines and free shipping

Was also going to mention Iron and Earth although he doesn’t seem to ever advertise machines at your target price! Might be better to save or borrow for something better that will last longer!!

Also JayBee near Stroud. Again been in business for some years.

In the Forest of Dean there's KS Barber. Very good reputation but tend to specialise towards wheeled machines. Depends on stock on the day you ask probably.
all going to be plus Vat as it goes with the territory.

My search was closer to two years for my 'perfect' machine  ....... and i reported hundreds of the bastards :mad: ... reported one the other night .. one of Johnny Barnes's machines - at his house  so they must've kept the details for a hell of a long time  .. he's not sold from his farm in a looooong time

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to respond. Sounds like i've waited too long to buy and it's now the worst time to be looking!

I'm now set on buying from a dealer. I'll stay away from ebay as i can't be doing with the hassle. Thanks for the suggestions - the following look like good leads.

Budd Plant
John barnes plant
iron and stone
KS Barber

Liking the look at the tb106's on some of these sites - i'll have to stretch my budget to 8/8.5k but sounds like a sounder investment.

I'll start my own thread to let you know how i get on. Hopefully it won't be a repairs thread!!

Thanks
Mike
