I think it’s to do with what they call the bridge formula, basically you can carry more over a stretched chassis. Sure Kief can answer this one. Must be a nightmare with different rules and axle loading formula in different states.

I thought it was BIGGER IS BETTER.
I haven't driven an American lorry but seen a few up close and they don't look anywhere near as nice to spend time as a euro lorry.
