Doing a self build home . For myself . Can I use red diesel in an excavator that stays for the duration of the build ?

I don’t know price difference at the moment as I’ve been buying only white for so long I’ve not really looked at the price of red .Not if it's construction....but of course you do horticultural
I thought I might have been ok as it was not for profit work .

the likely hood of hmrc paying a site visit to a self build is remote. crack on .

Theoretically it’s white.. it’s all I’ve ran in all the machines since the rules changed - its not worth the bother getting afew hundred litres of red for the Agri/tree work.
I’ve not heard of smaller sites being checked as of yet, only a larger haulage/plant company, but I’m not 100% if it was HMRC or DVSA dipping!

We have been dipped on sites in Croydon. And they have been on the side of the road dipping machines on trailers and worries.

Interestingly I noticed our county cops now just got brand new crew cab transits marked commercial vehicle enforcement units...rumour has it they having a big push ATM weather that's Flip flop the tang missing a strap or diesel sniffing remains to be seen.

Even getting hold of red is not straightforward nowadays, the fuel delivery companies are asking you to send proof you are entitled to use it. I think they get fined if delivered to non appropriate user but could be wrong

I'd only use red if I was sure it was complying . I'd expect that as a contractor they might take a dim view to catching me on red when I know the craic as opposed to a self builder who has bought a digger for his site but isn't a contractor.

Used to be RDCO reg.s for red sales ... anything over 100ltrs had to be full details and inside leg measurement, with intended usage by buyer ... Registered Dealer in Controlled Oils .. I used to be one - monthly submissions of every sale made- been in place for pushing two decades .. can't imagine it's changed much, just not so much getting sold ...
Domestic generators are entitled to red as is Ag. still

apparently redex causes diesel to turn red. keep an empty bottle in cab.
