Planting whips

Might have 10k whips to plant at short notice. Anyone got any experience mechanising the process? Or is a tree planting spade the best method. There must be something I can attach to my 2.7 tonner.... suggestions welcome

I saw this..... looked like a good shout.... but I'd probably do wedges rather than tubes

The tree planting blokes are unbelievably quick, nothing on a 2.7t machine will compete. The only way you will do it quicker is with a tractor trailed jobby.

Yeah... it's something I've done a fair bit of but not quite at this scale. Maybe I'll look into the possibility of using a tractor and see if there's an attachment I can hire

Best bet would be to get a planting gang in tbh for that many. Gets very very boring very very quickly!

I welded a fork tyne onto back of a bucket to poke in but it was more like 250

Where it gets really slow is if you have to cane and guard the whips. You can get loads in quickly manually with a spade (our work experience lad does 500 in a day and he’s no tree planter…)

The idea is they go in at the weekend and do some.. you go back on a Monday and it’s very motivational planing more trees by break time than the 20 nimbys have combined

I saw something similar yesterday online . Guy was planting a twin row hedge with a 2.7t and had spikes welded to the bottom of a frame with the rows staggered . It looked about 8ft wide . I thought it was a great idea and wished I’d of thought of it when I planted my hedge .

They are quick on hedges, mentally quick.

When the ex in-laws did 30 odd acres of trees I’m sure it was 19000 trees and that took a gang about 2 weeks? It was 28 years ago so I’m a little rusty on the old memory . Me and the girl friend were flat out marking out the rows with stakes. Seem to recall we had a pair of stakes at each end of the rows so the guys could keep them eyes up/ lined up as they moved along the rows.

Yeah, doesn't look like much fun. Three blokes with spades would be comparable in efficiency i would say looking at the video, and looks like a double row would be out of the question

I'm assuming 300 plants per day is a realistic rate

If you are spiral guarding make sure the spirals are installed correctly otherwise you can’t spot-spray in the future (they need to shed water to the outside, not act as a funnel).
