Welcome, Dave. What work do you do with the John Deere?
Skidsteers everywhere when I've been there. You hardly ever see a dumper. I seen one the other year loading a tipper didn't realise they had so much reach on them.

It surprised me when I was testing the Cat CTL’s. The smallest, the 239 will just reach into an 8 wheeler with a muck body, I’d imagine the new 285 is quite a beast going by the one at Plantworx.

They will reach in and are impressive at first sight. But they achieve it with the funny parallel lift linkage. So have no outreach and are horrible to use. Even loading a 20yard ro-ro on the floor is not great. Would be improved with a toe tip. Really good for some things but definitely not the one trick pony the yanks try to use them as. Brilliant for tarmac work. And can run the planer head aswell. But I really don't like being on site when the lads are using them. The lack of visibility is truly lethal.

Yeh they also have big kerbs where I was in qld so easily giving him an extra 200mm of reach when the tipper was pulled up on rd and skidsteer loading him off the verge. I think they do a lot more landscaping out there bigger plots. You see hardly any dumpy bags its mostly loose tipped material then they are using these to move it. Must be lovely to not have to think about chewing up the ground or shelling out for ground mats hey @V8Druid

aye and a lot more sun too :giggle: .... not too bothered about their cost though ... from all I've looked at and not managed to be quick enough on, the last 9 months, don't think moving them on after will be much of a challenge ;)(y)

The 239 is radial lift, no forward reach at full height. The bigger machines with the vertical lift have more forward reach, but tbh they aren’t for that sort of work on a regular basis. X2 on visibility, imo Cat are one of the worst.

The only one that I think would be good for regular use would be the JCB Tele skid. I haven't driven one but they have some outreach and only blind on one side.

I have Bobcat 463. It’s an incredibly useful little thing. It weighs 1.2te so is easy to transport. At full lift the bucket pins are 2.4m above the ground. I’ve used it to load an agricultural tipping trailer without any problems.

Visibility to the sides is not good but visibility behind is not existent. I’ve had to put a camera on it to avoid reversing in to things when working in tight spaces.
