Curiosity: What would be the largest and most powerful backhoe ever built?

Sorry for the bizarre question, which brand and model would be the largest and most powerful backhoe ever built? I realize they're no longer used, replaced by mini excavators and skid steers that are faster, more powerful, versatile, and compact. But just to satisfy my curiosity, what would be the largest and most powerful backhoe ever built? JCB, Volvo, Caterpillar, Komatsu... Thanks, I await clarification.

biggest and most powerful backhoe loader is generally considered to be the JCB 5CX, especially in heavy-duty applications like waste management, known for its massive engine power (around 109 HP), deep dig depth (over 20 ft), and high breakout force, making it a top-tier versatile machine for tough jobs. While other brands like John Deere (710L with 148 HP) also offer powerful models, JCB's 5CX series consistently stands out for its overall strength, deep reach, and market leadership in the backhoe loader category. ?'

  • Power: Features a powerful JCB engine for heavy-duty digging and loading.
  • Versatility: Combines agility with strength for various tasks like roadwork, trenching, and rehandling.
  • Performance: Offers deep dig depths and excellent lifting/breakout forces.
  • Durable Design: Built with heavy-duty chassis and reinforced components for demanding conditions.
Other Powerful Contenders:

  • John Deere 710L: Noted as one of the biggest by horsepower (148 HP) with significant dig depth and advanced hydraulics.

  • Hydrema 926G: Features a 147 HP Cummins engine with high torque for demanding tasks.

I think the US have some monsters, big CAT’s and John Deere’s about 12-13 tonne.

yt5s has obviously never heard of the Lannen BHLs then - as big as the Huddigs and equally capable if not even a little more brutish -- JA Bond on Maskinisten has one and what he's done with it is quite remarkable

Not a bizarre question at all 🙂 If we’re talking traditional backhoe loaders, the top end is usually debated between JCB 5CX/4CX and John Deere 710L. The 710L actually wins on raw horsepower, but JCB tends to lead in dig depth, reach, and breakout force, which is why the 5CX often gets called the “biggest” in real-world work. Once you step beyond that, you’re really into excavators, not backhoes anymore.
I think Huddig and Lannen might beg to differ.
