Compacting clay

Working on a water tank, previous twots made a real balls of it so trying to fix their mess. Part of that job is replacing the rubbish concrete they poured rd it with a clay and bentonite bund. Apparently they removed the bund that had been in since the 1800s and that’s when it started leaking.

I have a compaction wheel but can’t really wheel it where the clay will be hard up against the rear wall of the tank as sat straight into it, but would be the best if I could as with sheep’s foot it’d mix clay and bentonite etc

Would a compaction plate be any good on clay or a waste of time? Seen this one local

Tank is 2m deep

I reckon the sheep’s foot wheel under a tilty would be able to squash the clay into/under that back wall. A bucket should manage to force it into place first.
Is your mate wishing he’d stuck with the roofing now?! 😂

I should add we’ll be draining the tank put this in to be a temp reservoir as we are repointing the stonework in the tank which was the original job! lol 😂

Working the clay into a plastic homogeneous state in a different place and then taking slices off with a smooth digger bucket works well for me 😉

So work it up in like a dumper skip or even just on a road plate then transfer it over flick it in press it with flat of bucket.

I believe in canal construction back in the day they used to run flocks of sheep on the clay to puddle it.

Well I haven’t got one yet so…..

There’s about 4 new machines and tilties gone into this lol 😂

I like to think of it as a 45 gallon drum that’s on fire and I’m trying to put it out by throwing 50 pound notes on it

Compaction plate is no good on clay but an elephants foot will do it no problem.

Often people think that the vibration of plates increases the weight/pressure of the plate. But actually the vibration makes material particles vibrate and bounce against each other reducing the friction between the particles and allowing the same weight to have a better affect. This relies on the vibration frequency being the same as the resonant frequency of the material. It is why Wacker plates and rollers are available with different frequencies.
An elephants foot works by kinetic energy and just beating the hell out of the material, therefore does a better job on clay. Whilst still doing a good job on stone.

I've worked it up straight on the ground without any difficulties.
Back in the day the canals had their repairs done in the summer, seems to work well in drying weather as the clay can be moist enough to be plastic but dries as it is compacted.
Animals have traditionally been used to puddle clay. There are photos of a steam driven pug mill working clay prior to being placed on the Thames & Severn canal.

I’m more than over the moon with the fact we have just completely finished off our house - minus tarmac on the driveway which is a problem for another year! It’s nice not having to pay off a 10k +credit card bill every month!!

I’m also balls-deep in an eternal money-pit ‘home improvement’. Have never seen money disappear so fast for so long... Add my wife hates me too! (My dogs still seem to love me though, which helps 🤣)

My wife had a melt down at me because I’d gone into our kitchen in my boots to make the lads a brew and the cleaner had been the day before, I’m like ffs I’m not taking boots off ten times a day. We’ve no mud it’s all concrete etc need to crack on I’ll sweep it etc end of day or set the roomba on overdrive mode lol 😂

Kitchen is back door into new extension and is old lvt which is all going and becoming new downstairs wc and utility once new kitchen is in

My dogs 15 and maybe on way out she’s very reluctant to get out her beds nowadays stopped eating her food only eats roast chicken now lol 😂

She’s most expensive rescue dog ever after 3 bouts of pancreatitis at about £1800 a pop for a week at the vets

My Mrs has this thing where she wants the house clean beyond practicality. 10years and I'm slowly wearing her down to accept my mess
