there is something on the monmothshire council website ,its called fix mypath, you can report stuff on there ie overgrown hedges ,pot holes etc and invairably they get cut or fixed
Our Local council employ literally the areas best hedge cutting guy… (he wins all the competitions) ………to mow the vergesThe ridiculous thing is hedge cutting is incredibly cheap - it’s daft to scrimp there.

One thing Derbys are good at is digging out grips in the verge to allow standing water to drain off. No such thing over the hill!Derbyshire dales appear to have someone with a tractor mounted flail, that cuts the verge, but won’t knock back anything above that’s overhanging it
We've got an old fella in an asta van....🫣Not saying that it works perfectly and ive actually forgotten how its setup in the u.k .. does u.k have a village worker ?
Over here in our commune, (27km2 / 630 pop) we have couple of employees with a shed and certain amount of kit, tractor and mower, 3.5t tipper etc and their job is to maintain basic things in the commune.
Some roads are communal and some are departmental so thats where the town is in charge.
Seems to work o.k because as both the fellas live in the commune they have a vested interest in the job.
Unfortunately not, as @doobin says the lengthsman was pretty much that, usually local, and vast knowledge of their area, they know every grid, pipe and grip, where puddles would form, where they needed to keep a eye before problems started. Cost saving, they all gone, now less people covering much larger areas. Not saying that it works perfectly and ive actually forgotten how its setup in the u.k .. does u.k have a village worker ?

And that's how it is in the UK Kev. @Furniss think you did the right thingUnfortunately not, as @doobin says the lengthsman was pretty much that, usually local, and vast knowledge of their area, they know every grid, pipe and grip, where puddles would form, where they needed to keep a eye before problems started. The older staff with the knowledge, have or are retiring, less replacements seem to be coming in, any with enthusiasm for doing the job, appear to move on, or get the enthusiasm knocked out of them by their colleagues or management.
We've got a village idiot does that countNot saying that it works perfectly and ive actually forgotten how its setup in the u.k .. does u.k have a village worker ?

Your Neighbour has recently been bitten by the French way of life and purchase a ruin that he is doing up with the plan to sell up over here and move permanently.Yeah but Im probably guilty of making it sound better than it is, sort of smug expat syndrome ,anyhow Its obviously not all perfect, by any means, for years ive ranted on about a 1001 things that are harder here, a proper wading through treacle job ! that said even in the 90's I remember moving plant across town to jobs and having to plan what time to move so we weren't stuck in traffic half the friggin morning, didnt like that feeling of too many people and not enough space,it wasn't going to get any better,so we chose somewhere quiet over here.
