I bought this excavator a few years ago, and it looks rough, but works great. I have no idea what make it is, as all of the stickers in the cab are in Japanese. Cany anyone identify it for me, or tell me where the serial number might be, as I need some filters for it. It has an Isuzu diesel engine.

It's a chieftain
Wow. That was fast. Looks like you are absolutely right. I googled Chieftain Excavator, and found a matching photo on an auction site. Unfortunately nothing else. I really would like to find out where the serial number is located.

On looking further, it seems Chieftain was made by IHI, which is now KATO. The suggestions have really helped, thanks everyone!

I contacted the US KATO dealer in Kentucky. He was kind enough to find an old parts manual they had for an IHI IS-35F, and sent me a diagram of the hydraulic tank. It looks identical to mine, and shows the same in-tank hydraulic oil filter that I have been looking all over for with a part number of 075 5222 01. They didn't have one in stock, but says he can get one sent to me from IHI inJapan for US $111. I can't find any cross reference for this number, or find this filter anywhere else, so I guess I will order it this way.
