Going to grab myself a tidy 80 roller at an auction… only going for the cheaper end 10years old ish £5k budget..
anyone got anything to say about that year roller? Good/bad?
Would be Hamm/Bomag or maybe a newer JCB as they seem to go abit cheaper..

You'll get quite a nice tidy 80 JCB roller for only a couple of k more than your budget. Mine at 3 years old with 112hrs on is not worth a lot more. And I think either travis or jewsons have released a load from their fleet recently so there's plenty to choose from.
I like my JCB roller and others who have driven it also think its not a bad tool after initially writing it off. Paintwork isn't great but underneath they seem to be ok. They need warming up a bit before you get full vibrations, I suspect the little Kubota engine is on the limit of what it can do and cold oil doesn't help. But you get a good wack from them once they are going. Mine had all the wiring for the roll bar lights too tucked away on top which was a nice touch and made it easy to fit them.

I’ve got a little 80Hamm roller, it’s 2015 with about 400 hours now, been relatively trouble free until a rubber mount broke recently, assumed it would be a quick fix,but it looks like the water tank has to come out and all associated crap around it.
I intend to get rid of it next year along with a few other machines (I think😬).

Also fancy adding an 80 sized roller to my kit at some point. There seems a big gap between 1k barely running and 10k decent kit. Maybe folks just hold on to them at the 3/4/5k price point? I’ve seen these on marketplace that appear genuine?

Looks like ex ‘tippers’ kit, photos in their yard so seems legit, may as well sell at auction price and forgo the auction fees! Just gotta go and view it. Pay the man and take it home with ya , can’t really scam you very much then!

80 v 100 v 120 ?

If you could move whatever you wanted whats the one that packs down best ?

80 due to smaller contact patch ?
Are too big to trailer cheaper ?

We always try and stock rollers. Specifically cheaper 80s for circa 5-6k and 120s for 8 ish k

Jcbs sell to unsuspecting people usually 🤣

Not having that after your recent announcement;)

I feel that it’s very different

Jcb rollers often sell to people who need a roller and see jcb do one so buy

What your talking about is years of hard work ahead pushing a brand and machines to people who hold low expectations of it and struggle to adapt to change

Completely dependent on make and model.
The best 80 has a higher static pressure than the worst 120. That's just from bomag. I assume the ex hire spec ones are probably somewhere in the middle.
As for size. 100 has nice visibility and manoeuvrability over a 120 but more stable than an 80. I think 80s are just about the most unstable thing to drive.

I wanted a 100 when we bought the 80, but unfortunately we needed to source a few bits of kit at the height of post Covid lunacy and the Hamm was by far the best we could find for not too much over the odds( and from a dealer I trust). The 100 has always been a good compromise between, size, weight and compaction,I have found that a 120 is sometimes too much on smaller jobs, especially in the wet.

Problem with most 100’s is they are the exact same power and weight as a 80.. so larger drums with same power = less compaction force, I’d have a 100 if they were scaled up accordingly
