1989 3CX Dummy/Beginners Guide

Just recently taken delivery of a JCB 3CX Sitemaster Grey Cab. Got a couple of (admittedly) stupid beginner questions having not driven a 3CX before.

1) What is the lever on the LHS of the dash for? Has an somewhat L shaped gate to it
2) What is the shift pattern for the gears? I've been assuming Top Left - 1, Bottom Left - 2, Top Right - 3, Bottom Right - 4

That leaver is for four wheel drive and the gear pattern is like say just like a car

Thanks @Mogman cleared it right up. I had wondered if that was the 4WD, everything else is fairly self explanatory as you can generally see/hear the result of most things straight away
