I'm looking to buy a new generator. I made a mistake when I bought the current one. It is a Stephill 10kva petrol. There are two issues, firstly it is petrol, so I have to carry separate fuel for it which is a pain and more importantantly it only has a normal silencer and is deafening. We have to where ear defenders the whole time it is running.
These Hyundai silenced diesel generators look okay on paper (https://www.generators-direct.co.uk...hyundai-dhy8000selr-diesel-generator-long-run). Does anyone have any experience of them? Also is 70 db at 7m quiet? Is see some do 65 which is a lot quieter, but they are a lot more money.
On a side note I am considering having a switch installed at home so I could connect the house up if we had power cuts. I want to work out if this will be big enough. I can look at big appliances like the washing machine to see what power it uses, but is there a rule of thumb to cover things like lighting, pump for the central heating etc? Any idea?
Thanks

when SSE bring me a genny if the power is going to be off for long, they usually bring a 15Kva unit Gra .... but tell me ..."no welding" :ROFLMAO: .... 20Kva'd probably do all you want .... buy a 3 phase unit Boyo ... best of both worlds then ..... huge shop window once you have 440V:giggle:

I know I want a big 3 phase for the yard so I can have more toys, but I don't need one. What I need is a 110/240v quiet diesel that will fit crossways in the back of the pickup and can be manhandled round site.

I'm not sure I need more than 8KVA to do most of the house. We cook and heat on gas, so only need to power the washing machine or tumble dryer, lights and pump for central heating. It was only a thought if I'm going to get a silent genny I could have it ready for standby if required. Not peramantly running off grid, so only need to cover the basics.
Less than £1500 including VAT and postage seemed good value, if it were any good.

If it really is important to manhandle around site then that will limit you to no more than 2.5/3kVA. I have the same problem in the wood and bought one of the Evolution interchangeable power units and alternator. Each half is about 30kg, so you can actually lift and carry it around, if bolted together then you can't. It is petrol, also really need earmuffs when running. I have run a 9" angle grinder from mine, for hours.

Forget about powering the house, just how many long, more than 6 hour, power cuts do you get?

15kVA and can't weld? Assuming it is the usual 150A arc welder then there is something wrong with their genset.

Withams, mod-sales.com, seems to have many gensets in their auction, a lot are Chinese. If noise is a problem, and it is, make sure you hear the set running, take a couple of fan heaters to give it some work but that isn't really important. A 1500rpm one will always be quieter than a 3000rpm one.

Thimbleby & Shorland auction off loads of gensets on a regular basis of all sorts of sizes. Normally from their site in Reading.

We were working on a data centre in central London a few years back and the power kept shutting down, cos the road was overloaded. Installed a manual changeover switch so we could easily switch from mains to generator on the road and was pretty effective... just had to remember to turn it back over when the power came back on!

what did the road being overloaded have to do with the main tripping out :confused::unsure:

No, very rare we have power cuts, but I’m old enough to remember the late 70’s when there were regular power cuts. If Corbin gets in next time I expect that sort of problem again and as I’m looking for a new generator anyway I think it makes sense to be prepared.

That hyundai will be made in china and will be a loud bugger. The silent sticker is taking the piss. I have a similar one but red. Its really good on fuel but has needed a few regulators and wires replacing. It also likes to shake it self to pieces.

One thing to watch out for is 3000rpm vs 1500rpm sets - I think most petrol ones are 3k hence the noise, when you start getting into the 10kva+ diesels make sure it's a 1.5k set - they're quieter and run better IMHO. Sweet spot for a house and towable would be around the 15-20KVA mark.
